|Dear River Market & Donald’s Market. I humbly ask that you consider a proposal of Ava and mine Jason Wettstein. This project was conceptualized by Ava Wettstein my 9 year old girl who has been an active gardener since she could crawl in the dirt.
Walking down the Boardwalk has been a pleasure of ours for a number of years the gardens down its corridors are lovely. We especially like seeing kale, blue berries and other edibles. We believe that every park should have an area dedicated to community garden spaces and that this could and should be maintained my those that wish to utilize these areas. Not only do community gardens unite and strengthen communities, but they provide food security for those in need all awhile beautifying areas that can otherwise be food deserts and waste lands. Lets face it a parking lot is awful but you add some raised garden beds and a few benches and a Parking Lot is magically transformed into a PARK in a Lot.
We purpose that a couple high exposure areas (to start with) be fitted with raised garden beds known as Wicking Garden Beds. These beds require much less watering and in the case of West Coast weather I think its save to say its not likely they will need watering at all and at most 3 times a year.
Two Locations we feel are best suited are:
Location 1. 8th Ave and 8th Street
1. 8th Ave and 8th Street at the green line along 8th avenue in New Westminster. This location I believe is great for its exposure and to bring food security to an area that I believe is in need. I envision the south side of the beds be lined with benched, increasing comforts of spectators and shade to the are of the beds holding water. I like that it is central and that it has so much to offer around it and it really feels to me like all that it is missing is a community garden.
Location 2. The BC Pkwy New Westminster (Boardwalk)
2. The BC Pkwy New Westminster (Boardwalk) and for a few reasons lets start with the new boardwalk area. This area is perfect for many reasons. Its is close to sky train making it accessible to many people.
I think that the theme of this Parkway has been progressive in that the gardens are every more appealing. We have seen berries, kale, strawberries and many other types of food plants. I truly believe adding the wicking raised garden beds along the parking area really transforms that area making it feel like its a park.
Advantages of Wicking Beds
Wicking beds have a lot of advantages over standard raised beds and in-grown swale-based gardens:
They are water-efficient! Watering from the bottom up prevents evaporation of surface water (which occurs when you water beds from the top).
They are self-watering! Wicking beds are an especially great system to use in community gardens because they save people from driving every day during hot weeks to water their beds. No evaporation means no salting of soil. Hands down, green thumbs up this is the best way to maintain low maintenance community gardens in almost any location including dropped right on top of a parking lot.
A good point to make as it have been mentioned a few times “what about theft or people taking food” and the best answer I have heard to this is ” then they need it more than I do and it is exactly why I do this” and I feel exactly the same, please come get some fresh food.
For the people by the people, we all win in the garden!
